Practices of developing transversal competences: The Lithuanian example

As one of the countries taking part in the implementation of TRANSVAL-EU project and participating in the research activities on transversal competences, Lithuania is delighted to present an exemplary initiative for the development of transversal competences in the country: ArtIST project participated by the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). ArtIST is a European initiative that aims to integrate Arts in the education of innovation, entrepreneurship and science. The project was run from January 2020 to June 2023.

Transversal competences can be applied across different domains and contexts, such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Therefore those competences are increasingly valued by employers and society, but they are often not developed or assessed by formal education systems. Therefore, there is a need to create interdisciplinary and experiential learning opportunities that can foster the development of transversal competences among students.

The main idea of the ArtIST project is to design and implement innovative Master-level modules integrating Arts in the education of innovation, entrepreneurship and science. The project aims to create a common body of knowledge on transdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) approaches for the teaching of business and innovation management. The ArtIST is funded by the European Union programme Erasmus+ and involves several partners from different countries.
